went to a friend's birthday dinner at a private kitchen tonight. people were dressed up, birthday balloons were placed around, the tables were set; as we were standing around, waiting for all the guests to arrive, the server was walking around, handing out flutes of champagne for pre-din cocktails.
in mid-conversation with a few people, i naturally accepted mine from the server. as my friend noticed all three of us in the conversation now had our glasses, he raised his and offered a welcoming toast to start the evening and we raised glasses to join. JUST as my glass was coming up, my friend Kathy, the gracious hostess, suddenly interrupted, saying, "hey, can you drink??" <DOH>. i stopped my glass suddenly, just before it had made it to the promised land~ with the usual party setting, i had COMPLETELY forgotten about the diet and corresponding no-alcohol--it just so naturally had slipped my mind given the celebratory nature.
we laughed about my timely forgetfulness, and i sheepishly and not-too-happily passed off my full glass of champagne and substituted a full glass of sparkling... water!
It helped me lot to be holding a wine glass or a champagne glass with water in it. Psychologically better than a water glass. And fewer people comment as they have usually had too many to notice that the colour of the liquid in your glass is too light!
ReplyDeleteyeah, the server was kind enough to give me a flute w/ sparkling water in it, to keep the festive look :)
ReplyDeletealso, i still really enjoyed sniffing the wine from my friends' full glasses. def made me want to enjoy a sip as well, of course, but once in a while, as i was enjoying my dish of sirloin beef, to get a whiff of that nice red wine was still a treat~
